About the RxOC

Today, prescription medications represent the fastest-growing segment of health care costs — climbing nearly 400 percent between 1980 and 2005. Facing this challenge, four of Ohio's largest public health benefit purchasers formed the Rx Ohio Collaborative (RxOC) to change the face of prescription-drug health care in the state.

The Rx Ohio Collaborative (RxOC) is an expanding benefit initiative for Ohio public sector employers to save money on drug costs at both the organizational and consumer level.

"The RxOC has allowed us to benefit from excellent economies of scale. We have an enhanced pharmacy benefit management program with disease management services that a 2,300-member organization could never achieve on its own."

— Dick Curtis, executive director/chief investment officer Ohio Highway Patrol Retirement System

The RxOC concept was formed in 2007 by a collaboration of four of Ohio’s largest pharmacy benefit purchasers: The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), The Ohio State University (OSU), School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS) and State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS), as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol Retirement System, which now collectively serve more than 485,000 Ohioans. These original participants anticipate a total savings of $300 million in drug costs by 2011. The ultimate objective is for Ohio public entities to save money on their pharmacy benefit spending, and to help reduce the budgetary requirements for these services, ultimately lessening the burden on the State’s budget.

The Ohio State University is leading this effort to help Ohio public entities save money on their pharmacy benefit spending and to help reduce the budgetary requirements for these services, ultimately lessening the burden on the state's budget.
